DAY 1: INTRO TO TIER II

Day one and done! Icebreakers were the same-old-same-old; awkward but fun. It was fun to catch up with people from Tier I and get to meet all the new people I'll be spending the next month of June with. After hearing Dr. Al's inspiring speech we were sorted into birthday months and played Jeopardy with the interns. Even though we didn't win, OctoMay did pretty well as a team.

The most interesting part of the day was when Dr. Epright came to speak to us about ethics in medicine. I loved hearing all the different cases that made me question my own moral code; I used to think that it was simply black and white with decisions but when you add in Fact vs Value and emotion vs argument the grayer areas of medicine begin to appear. Even if someone is strongly opinionated and passionate about one view there are many legal considerations as well as needing to respect the decisions of others. The Lakeberg Case of 1992 certainly made me look outside the box. At first I strongly sided with not performing the surgery because it wouldn't improve the quality of life for the twins and the money could be funneled into other more pressing programs. However, the more I discussed it with my peers the more it was hard to stick to one opinion.

The library and HSEB tour given by Casey Wiley was very similar to the tours we did in Tier I but it was a good refresher. Mrs. Zimmerman was very inspiring with her topic of "How to Present". It was funny to see her since I've seen her commercials on TV and didn't know she was involved in GHS. Public speaking is not my forte but it is certainly something I would like to improve.
