John Snow does know something

Session two of three for the Bibliotherapy completed for today!  I think one of the sweetest things that we learned about the patients we will be visiting soon is that the "A Dose of Prose" study found that they generally prefer fairy tale stories the most.  That small detail, I believe, gives a big insight on what its like for the geriatric patients at this point in their lives; the stories we used to read when we were younger bring comfort when we're older.  Maybe that's why so many people still are obsessed with Disney even though adults are wayyyyy past the original target audience.  I still get nervous, however, when Mrs. Lawson talks about the different scenarios we could have with patients; not wanting to be read to, falling asleep on us, etc.  I'll just have to be prepared and keep an open mind until then I guess but I do appreciate how the program is preparing us and being honest about everything that we might encounter.

Following this, Mrs. Melissa Fair came to discuss with us what exactly Public Health entails.  Aside from discussing the general definition and impact of public health, Mrs. Fair also demonstrated the effects with the case of Dr. John Snow who didn't know nothing but instead discovered the root of how a cholera epidemic manifested in London.  It was really fascinating how it Sherlocked his way to the solution. Im glad she will be coming back to talk to us about other topics too.  Hopefully she'll bring more real-life cases with her.

Luckily for me, today was not my day to suffer at the fitness test.  My group from the previous day watched the movie "Wit."  This was especially hard for me to watch as I had a family member who recently was subjected to chemotherapy and passed away from cancer.  What disturbed me the most was how cold the physicians seemed but there are so many variables in the movie to think about; its a complicated situation just like in real life. I just hope I won't become a distant physician like that.
