The Living Question of Death

Today was an odd day.  Not because of any of the speakers that we had.   No, it was because I was talking with one the other MedEx students how it felt like we had already been here for a month; week one has only just finished.  I don't want to think about how fast the next few weeks will fly by.

The day began with our third and final Bibliotherapy class given by Mrs. Lawson but that only means next week will be simulations! I can't wait to try out the simulation lab with actors.  On completing our certification we were given our badges as Bibliotherapists which is something no one can help but flaunt to their friends (it may or may not have been put up on my snapchat story...).

One speaker I was looking forward to the most this week was Dr. Epright.  In Tier II she did such a fantastic job about discussing ethics with us and making us think and not just listen to what the rules say.  I really enjoyed those sessions and listening to her talk about the problem with the definition of death was interesting.  Its incredibly frustrating to hear about the cases of keeping PVS patients on life support but that is the decision of their parents and spouse... wether for religious or personal reasons.  There are just so many ethical issues, it seems, that could be simply solved with having a more educated and aware public but implementing plans that would help fix this cracks in the system never have a simple answer; money and time and various other blocks always get tangled up in the way.  To think about resuscitating someone who continuously crashes hour by hour... Im personally torn between agreeing to keep the patient alive at all costs but at that point who's benefit is it truly for?  Is the patient not just suffering over and over between life and death and pain?

After that cheerful discussion, the afternoon held our second MCAT session.  I think CARS is going to be my golden child for this test.

Lastly, we were able to receive our blood testing back from the life center and Health Risk Assessment.  Mrs. Tara Ross, who gave the nutrition and diagnostic presentation, was really informative.  It is something that we do hear every year but I was really interested this time since I'll be cooking more for myself this upcoming school year.  Understanding what constitutes good nutrition will certainly be better than heating up frozen pizzas for dinner each night.
