Last Dose of Prose (for now)

Today was hands down one of my favourite days of MedEx so far. I didn't even care that half of it was Kaplan test prep. Usually at the end of the day Im mentally and physically tired but for some reason we went much later today than we usually do and I was still full of energy when I got home!

After Kaplan in the morning there I had my final bibliotherapy session with MedEx. I got to return to Greenville Place (which is now my favourite out of all the locations I was able to visit) and spend the majority of my time with one patient. There were just so many stories that they had to tell me and I would like to write them all down to share but silly HIPPA gets in the way of that. When Sanjana and I were about to leave the activities coordinator even told us that we were able to make one of their most stubborn patients laugh and have a good time and honestly that made it worth all the time we got to spend with them. I don't think that I certainly want to work solely with geriatrics patients but what I know now is that I want to work with a broad spectrum of patients; not just focused on one age group because I feel as if I have so much to learn from all different kinds of patients. Honestly, that's what I've learned the most from this experience. These residents that we get to meet have lead full lives and even though they cannot express their stories as coherently as someone younger than them that doesn't mean that they are less important. I feel as if from this experience I feel more comfortable to approach strangers on my own and interact and to actively listen to people to keep the conversation going and make them feel like they matter.

After bibliotherapy was finished we all headed back to the medical school for the MedEx Cookout! I was super stoked because I knew Sanjana was bringing these amazing cookie dough cupcakes and she did not disappoint. Neither did everyone else! There was buffalo dip, lemon bars, fruit, salad, and of course the grilled meat that was delicious. I love food and I could go on but I'll just let the pictures speak for themselves. :)

We didn't run out of food anytime soon.

When everyone was too hot and sweaty outside we headed for the common room inside. Some people were playing ping pong but there was an intense round of foosball going on as well and lets just say a bunch of Type A pre-meds don't like to lose so it got pretty intense. Overall today was probably one of the funnest days I've had this summer at MedEx!!

Foosball is more intense than I thought...
