Critical population

Suicide is not an easy thing to discuss. It is not an easy thing to confront others about either.

This morning, our first session was the QPR training lead by Sarah and Henry. Both of them did an excellent job handling the heavy information and creating a safe space for discussion. That doesn't mean, however, that it was any easier to go through.

I do believe that since this was our second mental health discussion emotions weren't running as high this time as everyone knew what to expect.

One of the reasons that I believe that it is important, and GHS seems to understand this as well, is that suicide outreach at our age is critical since the people in my Tier (and as we progress throughout our healthcare careers) are one of the most at risk populations. The stress of undergrad, the stress of applications, the stress of rejections... It's something that we are all experiencing right now. Not being able to handle the stress sometimes isn't a shameful thing but seeing as many people who want to pursue medicine believe that they need to be, and seem, emotionally tough and this leads them to seeking out help the least. I saw that a lot in my residents last year at school who were pre-med or pursuing difficult majors. Suicide is a difficult topic, no matter how much training or experience someone has, but it is a necessary discussion if we seek to improve population health as a whole.

Writing the positivity notes to hand out later this week was a nice break afterwards!
