“A story has no beginning or end: arbitrarily one chooses that moment of experience from which to look back or from which to look ahead.” ― Graham Greene, The End of the Affair

Just like every summer of the Medical Experience Academy its never a slow day, even on the first day! Its been almost a full year since Tier III but coming back and seeing all the familiar faces it feels as if the past two semesters went by in the blink of an eye. As nice as it was to see all the familiar interns seeing new faces was equally exciting. After the first day introduction to the program began we were on our way with the rest of the days activities!

Yay food!

To begin, Dr. Hines (who also spoke in previous tiers) came to talk to us about a career in radiology. There really is a specialty in medicine for everyone because the amount of physics, breath of knowledge, and general math skills used in his work was certainly polarizing when compared to a surgical specialty. I loved hearing about the evolution and uses of technology in the field: the first x-ray, MRIs, ultrasound, CT scans, etc... Not only that but Dr. Hines also discussed with us the different types of chemicals injected into the body for analyzing different cases as well as how involved the field is in multiple specialties.

Once we had completed a couple of ice breakers with our table we were given the grand tour of the medical school and OR! Not too much has changed since the last time I toured the building yet Im still impressed by all of the simulation rooms as well as how disorienting the hospital corridors are.

The one surprising part of the afternoon was getting to meet the MedEx board. The interns always discuss with us how much they do to support the program but it was very different to see them all in person. Hopefully they liked seeing us as well! They certainly enjoyed Cameron's presentation, Sharon's speech and Tyler's drum performance from the bibliotherapy program. The first day couldn't end without one of Al's inspiring speeches and now I cannot wait to see all that the summer has to hold for us!
